GERMAN COLONIAL MUSEUM OF FRUTILLAR

The German Colonial Museum of Frutillar is one of the cultural attractions administrated by the Museologic Direction of the Austral University of Chile in the X Region.
Its attractive location and the diverse constructions inside the building show the visitor what it has been the history of the Llanquihue Lake's basin with the huge German influence of their settlement in the area.

The German Colonial Museum of Frutillar was born mainly on behalf of the local inhabitants who wanted to let others know their history. With this purpose the Municipalidad de Frutillar gives the Austral University of Chile the land for its building in 1979. Four years later, the architecture department of the same university begins the searching, design and execution project for the building of the museum with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany. The museum was opened to public in January 28 th in 1984.

Nowadays, the German Colonial Museum has four buildings that reproduce the main activities and customs of the ancient German people and their life style.

MILL HOUSE AND WATER MILL: Its attractiveness lies on its big wheel used to grind grains, specially the wheat for the flour elaboration to make bread, the whole process can be witnessed inside the house. Here there is a brief summary of the indian establishment at the basin of Llanquihue Lake and its historical process until these days.

THE BELL TOWER : Spanish influenced – building, it was used for the grain harvest. On rainy times, it was used for the horses and mules to ride. There are several agrarian tools and machinery from the XIX century for the manufacturing of sausages and milk by products. There are also some outstanding vehicles from the XVIII century.

BLACKSMITH WORKSHOP: The blacksmith and his workshop used to be a fundamental part for the farm to work in good condition. The craftsman worked for the property's owner next to the workshop where the tools were kept. Among these tools found there are forges, furnace, anvils, milling machine, hammer, chisel, band and others kept in a simple and peasant room style.

FIELD LARGE HOUSE: This building has a beautiful lake and volcanoes view, imitating the German house style whose level of comfort reached its highest point at the end of the XIX century. It was made of noble native woods like oak, hazel, lingue, tepa, coigue, among others. Inside we can see different types of rooms which exhibit the daily lifestyle of the colonos.

PARK AND GARDENS: In the garden we can find the most colorful and diverse kinds of flowers, native types of perennial forest leaves like radal, hazel, arrayan, and so on, and some introduced ones like acer, birch, encino, etc.
